Kauai is paradise for those who love the outdoors. Adventure tours abound. For the serious hiker (or casual day-tripper), you have options along the coast or in the island's interior. The Kalalau trail along the Na Pali Coast starts at the end of the road just north and west of Princeville. But for a morning walk or jog to stretch your legs, don't miss the walk-jog paths that circle the Princeville golf course. They start just around the bend from Kuhina Koa, your private luxury home in Princeville.
Just outside the Sunset Drive circle, when you reach Princeville's walk-jog-bike path, turn right and you'll walk into town (groceries, hardware, banks, public library, and many other shops and services). Turn left and you'll walk out toward the cliffs that circle Hanalei Bay, and the world-class Princeville Hotel. In the afternoon, enjoy the shade of the "tree tunnel" on the way to the library.
One morning in early December, as I walked along the walk-jog into town center for coffee, I spied a pair of Laysan Albatross dancing and courting and exploring nesting sites along the edges of the Makai Golf Course.
By the time I returned a couple of hours later, dad was settled in the the spot they chose a spot in the rough, just a few yards off the walk-jog path. (These photos are taken with a zoom lens—it's important to give these birds a little space and privacy.)
And, there he sat, and sat, and sat, incubating the couple's egg, until two months later--Valentine's Day to be exact—the egg cracked and a chick emerged.
(Look closely at the photo at right, to see the puff-ball chick under dad's chest!)
The Kalalau trail starts at the base of Bali Hai (visible from the living room lanai) and walks.
